During a keynote address on Tuesday, October 27th at Oracle OpenWorld 2015, Oracle Executive Chairman & CTO Larry Ellison spoke about IT security. He said, “We need much better security. We need a next generation of security. We are not winning a lot of these cyber-battles. We are losing a lot of these battles.” With the advances in technology performance, security is no longer an optional component. It needs to be sewn into the fabric of our systems.
We need to push security lower into the technology stack, creating a multi-tiered security strategy. Higher tiers will automatically and transparently inherit the benefits of security implemented at lower levels. Security at lower levels becomes a force multiplier in cyber-battles.
Oracle defends the silicon tier with its SPARC M7 processors, in which hardware-based encryption is enabled by default. Oracle’s “Silicon Secured Memory” blocks a category of security bugs known as buffer overflows. Attackers exploit known vulnerabilities within application platforms and operating systems to cause buffer overflows and capture small bits of data. This data may provide administrative access to systems.
Using Oracle’s Advanced Security Option on top of the Oracle Database Enterprise Edition provides Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) at the database tier. All applications developed to read and write data to the database inherit the data encryption without any additional coding. Performance is not impacted due to TDE’s ability to leverage CPU-based hardware cryptographic acceleration available in Intel and SPARC platforms.
These are two examples of how security can be pushed lower into the technology stack to create the next generation of security. Security can no longer be an option or afterthought when developing systems; it should be architected into multiple layers to defend against various types of attacks. It is time we start winning the cyber-battles!

Is your team still using Oracle Discoverer or Hyperion Interactive/Brio for reporting and ad hoc queries? Discoverer was removed from Oracle’s Strategic Roadmap in 2006 and Hyperion Interactive Reporting/Brio was removed in 2010. If they’re still part of your solution set, now is a great time to consider other options!
AST’s Legacy Reporting Migration Assessment will rapidly identify requirements, gaps, and overlaps, and deliver a roadmap for migration, while also considering Discoverer Metadata Migration Assistant and Interactive Reporting Translation Workbench, where applicable.
During this 2-to-4 week engagement, we will deliver a roadmap for migration to Oracle Business Intelligence. We fully analyze your migration initiative, identify the best practices for your organization, and provide tools to justify continued effort.
As an Oracle BI Pillar Partner, we enable our customers with actionable insights for their BI systems. We understand how to apply BI best practices to unique business challenges.

At this year’s Oracle OpenWorld, the software giant announced its new cloud services platform, which is designed to automate traditional manual processes and improve utilization of big data.  These two attributes will cut the costs associated with modifications to previous versions, and will allow companies to rapidly discover and utilize business insights.

With the advances provided by this new Cloud Platform, the ease-of-use in working within the Oracle environment has been streamlined for greater accessibility to all users. The offering allows improved flexibility for companies to decide which solution is best for their needs, whether on-site or offsite, and drastically reduces deployment times for infrastructure setup, capacity structuring, and data incorporation. This increasing trend of customizations to turnkey solutions continues to benefit large companies seeking to maximize their data with improved business intelligence, while allowing smaller organizations to begin utilizing and benefitting from the tools traditionally reserved for only larger firms.

Despite the emphasis on cloud migration, this solution provides the ability to fully integrate with more traditional infrastructures and on-site solutions. Increasing modularity allows companies of all sizes and configurations to better maximize the value and utility of Oracle’s business solutions by minimizing the cost and time to upgrade, deploy, and manage.

In true AST fashion, we celebrated this weekend’s spooky holiday on Friday with the Annual AST Halloween Chili Cook-off and Costume Contest!

We had 7 different – and delicious – chilis to choose from, but the crowd favorite goes to Cindy N. for her spicy vegan chili.

The award for most creative name goes to Stephanie R. for her chili, “#ItsNotHormel #Legit”; The Judges’ favorite goes to Bibash B. for his turkey chili; And…*Drum Roll*…the AST Golden Skeleton Trophy for Best Costume goes to Fatima B., for her “AST-Rex” inflatable costume!

Leverage the most up-to-date analytics with minimal risk with AST’s 11g Upgrade Assessment for BI Applications.
This is the most significant Oracle Business Intelligence (BI) Applications release in years. It’s been completely re-architected, leveraging the power of Oracle Data Integrator (ODI), and is released on the latest version of Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE).
Oracle’s strategic development for ELT for BI Applications will focus on ODI moving forward. As part of a BI migration, organizations should assess the current environment and existing applications separately to ensure that the infrastructure can support business objectives, both today and in the future.

We are packing up, heading out of the Bay Area and back to Illinois this afternoon.  We have had a fantastic week with our colleagues in the Oracle community, and we are already planning for next year!
We’ve learned a great deal from all of the informational sessions we attended, met new people and re-connected with others at the networking events, dined at some of the most fantastic spots in San Francisco, and shared our knowledge and expertise with our peers through our booth and our own informational presentations.  Thank you to Oracle for such a great event and to everyone who visited us at the Moscone Center.
We’ll see you all next year!
