Ugandan Government Officials to Visit AST, Cook County to Learn About IT in JPS
During the first week of July, a 17-person delegation of high-ranking officials from the Ugandan government will visit Cook County, IL and AST to learn about the work AST has done designing and building an Integrated Justice Application Network. The delegation will consist of members from various sectors, including Federal Courts, National Police, Corrections, National IDs, and Internal Affairs. Uganda has modelled its Justice IT initiatives off of AST’s Cook County CJIS Platform and this visit will help as they prepare to finalize their Integration Roadmap.
The delegation’s goals for this visit include:
- Meeting with their counterparts in Cook County and the Illinois Department of Corrections to further understand Justice Partner challenges and the steps taken to overcome those challenges;
- Better understanding the role and value that a dedicated integration platform plays;
- Deep diving into the work that AST has done in building the Justice Network at Cook County, hearing from County and AST SMEs, as well as functional and technical resources; and
- Touring Cook County courtrooms and County/State Corrections facilities.
Upon the delegation’s return to Uganda, the IT committee is expected to begin the, “Phasing out of existing legacy systems in Sector institutions and replace them with systems built on agile and integrated platforms with more functionality aligned to current business processes and the information needs of end users.”
AST has been leading efforts to implement Cook County’s integrated criminal justice information platform through an initiative that seeks to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the justice process, involving a wide range of stakeholders – citizens, law enforcement, judges, prosecutors, public defenders, federal employees, and policy makers. We look forward to sharing this successful story with the Ugandan government as it looks to integrate information systems as a means of improving institutional efficiency and service delivery.
